Water of Leith Walk
Saturday 26 January 2008 | Meet outside OSP at 9.15 - 9.25am
A gentle three or five mile morning walk from Leith. Finish at the Botanics (three miles) or at the Museum of Modern Art (five miles).
We begin our walk close to the centre of attractive, bustling Leith. Sometimes following the course of Edinburgh’s old suburban railway, we enjoy remarkably quiet stretches of the Water Leith. We climb very gently – mostly on metalled paths; the ascent is imperceptible. We cut through Warriston to the Stockbridge colonies. We have mid morning coffee at the Botanics. Those who wish can walk a little further to the Musuem of Modern Art; two years ago we walked this stretch in the opposite direction. There is a steepish climb from the Dean valley to the Museum – where there is another excellent café.
Arrangements
Meet outside OSP at 9. 15/9.25 am. We catch an LRT no 36 from Jeffrey Street (about 40 yards from OSP) at 9. 31 am and travel to the Shore, Leith (opposite Pizza Express) arriving at 10.01 am. Fare £1.
If you are making your own way to Leith, we meet either in or immediately opposite Café Truru, a Turkish café (open from 8 am) on the Shore, just after 10am. Please let Alastair – see contact – know if you are making your own way.
The Shore runs along the eastern bank of the Water Leith. To reach the meeting place: follow the Shore southwards (ie towards Edinburgh), from its junction with Bernard Street, keeping the river to your RHS. You’ll notice the Leith Gallery on the LHS. The Café Truru is on a rise beyond the Leith Gallery. On the other side of the road are an anchor and some benches. We then begin our walk by crossing the bridge marked Sandport Place and continuing up the Water of Leith on the other side of the river.
We finish the walk either at the Botanics (about 11 30 am) or the Museum of Modern Art (about 1 pm).
To return to the city centre from the Botanics – go to the East Gate and catch an LRT 23 and 27 to the Mound and George IV Bridge or LRT 8 to the top of Leith Walk and South Bridge.
We return from the Musuem of Modern Art to the City Centre on the free bus link.
