The Christmas Truce: readings and carols for Christmas

Date Posted: Friday 12 December 2014

Christmas 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the unofficial Christmas truce of 1914 when German and British soldiers spontaneously came together to celebrate Christ’s birth. Although it has acquired a mythic quality, the fact that it actually occurred is attested to by numerous written records of the time.

100 years later, on 21 December at 6.30 pm, our service of readings and carols for Christmas commemorates the Christmas truce. The service includes both traditional and modern carols, and we shall read extracts from some of the soldiers’ diary accounts of the truce. We also pray for the peace of the world: that justice may be the right of all, and that the hurts and horrors of war may be forever healed.
